Banana and Onion in a Jam
Banana and Onion in a Jam
Banana has big dreams
Banana bread! Banana pudding! Banana pancakes! Banana wants to be the star of the show! But when she overhears that she’s going into a fruit salad, she wiggles her way out of the fruit bowl and tumbles into a cardboard box with nothing in it except a lonely onion.
Hidden away, Banana shares her aspirations and dreams for the future, while Onion is simply happy to have a friend to keep him company.
Banana and Onion in a Jam is a picture book for ages 3-7, that is meant to help young children and their caregivers discuss complex feelings like disappointment, anxiety, and regret.
Banana experiences a roller coaster of emotions over the duration of her shelf life. She goes from firm and green to brown and mushy, and is ultimately faced with a disappointing possibility… that she might not be eaten at all.
In addition to the emotional journey, Banana and Onion in a Jam also presents the opportunity for several lessons for young kitchen explorers.
Resourcefulness - Ingredients have use even when they are past their prime.
Transformation - Time and heat can change the flavor and texture of ingredients. In this specific instance, children learn about caramelization.
Closed Loop Ecosystems - Just because produce is not eaten, does not mean that it has to go to waste. If it is composted, it will become energy for new food to grow.
Different, but Complementary - Two things can be very different, but that does not mean they don’t go well together.
The book ends with a recipe for Banana and Onion Jam - an original recipe by the authors that is the perfect use for an overripe banana and an aged onion that is surprisingly tasty and kid friendly.
